Design as a Research and Development tool

Pearson Matthews has been actively using design thinking to smooth the R&D pathway for more than 15 years while many are just waking up to its potential. We have honed our expertise with international clients who already appreciate its value. Design thinking helps R&D unravel complex and contradictory issues and ensure a clear definition can be taken forward into the subsequent design phases.

How is it of benefit to you?

R&D is the time to explore commercial offers and clarify user needs. It is also the first time a true idea of cost is indicated which means decisions made now will have more impact on success than at any other time.

Research shows that the decisions made during R&D are only subtly altered later, making it imperative to get it right. We are pretty sure we have the right approach at Pearson Matthews; our successful projects demonstrate this and should quell any doubts.

Achieving balance

We see achieving balance as our primary role during R&D; it is vital for a successful project. Even if the list of factors to be balanced is extensive, the excessive influence of any one will distort the outcome. The way to prevent this is constant adjustment. We liken this to getting a five-sided see-saw to balance; add weight to any one arm and all the others have to alter to return to perfect balance. In the same way design thinking can be used as a conduit to feed project decisions and continuously check balance.
